Today a part of the SHANTU WASH team visited Xinzhuang Elementary School, to learn more about their school garden project. They constructed school gardens 4 years ago and now have up to 10 gardens, growing various types of vegetables, fruits and herbs. There even is a butterfly & fish garden, and flowers are grown to attract insects like bees, to help pollinate the plants. It was nice to see that every bit of open space was used to implement these gardens and to create awareness among young children about the process of growing vegetables and fruits and teach them about the environment. Principal Chang mentioned as well, how this project spreads outside of the school; not only do children learn from it and gain more awareness, but they also pass their knowledge on to their parents and family, who start growing herbs and vegetables on roofs and balconies. It is great that in this way the whole city will become a little greener and we look forward to work together in the near future!
