Today, Teacher Jo taught our Healthy Helpers about nutrition and clean water. We began today’s class by reviewing the new words we learned over the last two weeks of summer camp. We played a word relay charades game. During this game, our Healthy Helpers acted out a vocabulary word to the next person in line, and the last person in line guessed the word. Then, Teacher Jo taught us vocabulary words to describe the five food groups, and we practiced creating balanced meals by drawing food we would like to eat in each food group.
Teacher Jo also taught our class about our water footprint, the amount of water we use to produce goods, including the food we eat. We calculated the water footprint of the food we drew on our worksheet. We learned that some types of food have a higher water footprint than other types of food. For example, more water is used to produce beef than fruit. This exercise helped us learn how we can help save water by eating food with a lower water footprint.
We ended our class today with a special activity: playing with clay! We gave our little friends the creative freedom to shape the clay into anything, and we were amazed by the results! Our Healthy Helpers created bumble bees, flowers, trees, and sweets like ice cream. This activity helped teach our kids about handwashing, since they needed to wash their hands after playing with the clay. Today’s class was very interactive and informative. Our Healthy Helpers enjoyed Teacher Jo’s fun games and creative activities.
