Our team had our last day of teaching nutrition classes at Chiputula Primary School today. We (Miku and Penny) had our third session of the nutrition classes for standard six, and our topic was cooking methods and preparation. We began our teaching by reviewing and making sure the students remember what we covered in the past two sessions. The cooking methods section covered boiling and steaming and introduced their advantages. In the cooking preparation section, we introduced effective ways to improve the intake of nutrients from the food, such as soaking beans before cooking and including vegetables and fruits skin.
We prepared steamed sweet potato balls as treats and asked them to come up with the ingredients we used, cooking methods, and whether we had used the skin of the vegetable or not. We prepared the steamed sweet potato balls using the direct steaming method for the sweet potatoes with skin, and mashed them while adding honey and margarine. The students were happy to see the treats and enjoyed trying new healthy desserts. We shared the recipe for the steamed sweet potato balls so the students can try it at home and share it with their family and friends!
We also visited the garden to check on the current status and helped the volunteer students transplant some of the seedlings into the beds. The vegetables in the beds were growing well and so much bigger than the last time we checked!
