Penny and Miku taught the second session of the nutrition class for standard six students today. Today’s topic was diabetes and hypertension, and the students learned the importance of sugar and salt intake within the recommended amount by the World Health Organization. The students participated in the sugar activity where they matched the amount of sugar from different food items. The students were very engaged in the activity, which was rewarding to see after preparing the materials for more than 300 students. They all tried hard to match the sugar amount and enjoyed the activity!
Jade and Tiffany taught the standard five students about food groups and nutrients today. They had an activity where each group represented a restaurant and the students received nine different ingredients to create a meal for the other students, the customers. When the groups presented their healthy meals, the other students danced to applaud.
The garden at Chiputula Primary School is scaling up nicely as well. Sally, Natasha (from Luke International), and Waza (our driver) went to water the vegetables in the morning, and it took more than half an hour to complete. The Chiputula Primary School students would water the vegetables after their morning shift (around noon), and again when the afternoon shift ends (around five), but the soil dries up quickly. Our SHANTU project Principal Investigator Prof. Chang-Chuan Chan suggested that in the future it could be helpful to install a solar-powered irrigation system.
We enjoyed traditional Malawian food for our dinner at Baxter’s (professor from Mzuzu University) place. His wife, Leah, spent the whole afternoon preparing dinner for us, and we got to try different Malawian dishes. The food was delicious and was the best Malawian food we have had so far!
