Today started with a visit to Chiputula Primary School to meet with the head teacher and teachers. Since the school is divided into morning and afternoon sessions, it was our first time meeting with these teachers. After introductions, we tended to the garden.
Today was our first day seeing sprouts in the garden! The teachers had planted the seeds in what they call the “nursery”, which is a soil bed where a lot of seeds are planted and will later be transplanted into rows. The kids took turns collecting water from the trench that runs alongside the garden and watering the sprouts. All the students were really enthusiastic to help and interact with us! We also learned about the crops that were planted. We learned they planted rape, chinese cabbage and mustard in the garden.
We also had a chance to ask the headmaster questions about the nutrition classes we would be leading. He gave us details about the students and any health education that they have received as part of their curriculum. He even gave us copies of the science curriculum for grades 5, 6, and 7, which are the grades that we will teach. The meeting was very helpful for giving us direction for creating the nutrition questionnaire and educational materials. After the meeting, we returned to the dorm and split into groups to start preparing the materials!
