Day 1: Health and Our Environment | SHANTU Archive

Today was our first day of the 2022 SHANTU bilingual summer camp at Xinzhuang Elementary School! We were so excited to be back at Xinzhuang and to meet our little friends. We’re going to meet every day for the next two weeks to learn all about global health and UN SDGs English words so we can be Healthy Helpers to make our world a better place.

Today, Teacher Katie and Teacher Bri taught our friends at Xinzhuang all about how our environment affects our health. Our Healthy Helpers had so much energy during the first day of the camp, and we had an exciting first class talking about what happens if our environment isn’t healthy. We discussed what happens if the air is polluted and our water is dirty, learning it affects humans, animals and the environment around us! A lot of our class loves shaved ice and bubble tea, but we all agreed that our stomachs wouldn’t feel good if we were only able to eat shaved ice and drink bubble tea for the rest of our lives. We found out that our environment isn’t the same in every community everywhere in the world, and we all shared our ideas of what we can do to make our environment a healthier place.

We learned that our friends in Malawi are Healthy Helpers too and are making a school garden like the one we have at Xinzhuang! We went out to the Xinzhuang school garden to explore our environment and see how our garden makes our Xinzhuang environment healthier. After watering all the plants and talking about the gardens, everyone agreed that our garden makes our environment healthier 😀 Then, we came back inside so our little friends could ask our SHANTU teachers about their homes. Our teachers are from countries all over the world, so this activity was really special. It was interesting to learn how the environments our teachers are from is really different from Taiwan! Learning this has helped us understand more about different parts of the world and how to protect our world.

At the very end of the day, we met our Malawian Healthy Helpers over video call! Our little friends at Xinzhuang were happy to say hello and ask our new friends questions about their garden.
