Guo-Tai Elementary School Field Visit (New-Taipei) | SHANTU Archive

On December 23, the WASH team went on a school visit for the last time this year, to learn more about objectives and aims for school gardens in Taiwan. Guo-Tai Elementary school is located in new Taipei city and believes that school gardens can play an important role in the education of children. Seasonal vegetables and fruits are grown in the small-scale gardens, which are used in nutrition, lifestyle and environmental education classes. There are plans to further expand the gardens, after a plot has become available that used to be a pond.

The school collaborates closely with local community members, who volunteer in the school gardens and each class in the Elementary school has their own part of the garden to take care of. The school says they are lucky to have so many local volunteers who help out with the gardens and also teach some classes about gardening. In this way, the gardens also help to connect people and they are able to share their love of gardening.
